UNSC delegation reaches Cox's Bazar

Led by Kuwait, Britain and Peru, the four-day Security Council visit is expected to include a meeting with Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as well as a helicopter flight over Rakhine to allow delegates to see the remains of villages torched during the violence.

They are scheduled to proceed to the Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya afterwards to hear direct accounts of the Rohingyas' situation. "We're very much eager to go back to our land, provided our security is ensured by the UN", Mohammad told AFP.

Members of the delegation met with officials from various United Nations bodies, the Rohingya Refugee Repatriation Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday night at the Royal Tulip hotel in Inani.

Myanmar has faced intense worldwide pressure over the military clampdown against the Rohingya launched last August that the United Nations has called "ethnic cleansing".

Ahead of the visit, an worldwide analyst told UNB that Bangladesh needs to provide "strong and unassailable evidence" backed up by documents to make its case before the UN Security Council delegation.

The UN has sought urgent financial aid to prepare the area against floods and landslides.

Bangladesh's acting foreign secretary, M. Khurshed Alam, said the delegation's visit is "very significant", with worldwide pressure on Myanmar continuing to mount to ensure the safe and voluntary return of the refugees, who are seeking protection from the United Nations. They're derided as "Bengalis", and many in Myanmar believe they are illegal migrants from Bangladesh.

Britain's United Nations ambassador Karen Pierce said the Rohingya "must be allowed to go home in conditions of safety".

Myanmar has said the military operation in Rakhine is aimed at rooting out extremists and has rejected almost all allegations that its security forces committed atrocities in the state.

Besides, Diplomats in Dhaka yesterday told that the visit can help the 15-member powerful world body truly understand the ground realities as the delegation will interact with the refugees in camps and listen to relevant actors.

"We told them that we're staying here to save our lives".

"We want restoration of our citizenship under Rohingya ethnicity".

Some of the Rohingyas are seen displaying placards that read: "We want justice", "Welcome to UNSC delegation" and "Not Bangali, Yes Rohingyas".
