Mattis reaffirms America's 'ironclad commitment' to defend South Korea

Yoon says North Korea also plans to re-adjust its current time zone to match the South's.

US President Donald Trump has said that there would likely be a US-North Korea meeting in the "next three or four weeks", but "whatever happens, happens", the media reported. This leaves Mr. Trump with the far more hard task of trying to negotiate some material progress toward those goals - a far more fraught engagement that puts the U.S. President at greater risk of failure or politically risky compromise.

Although North Korea has traditionally reserved denuclearization as an issue for the United States, the Panmunjom declaration mentions denuclearization as a way of teeing up preparations for the Trump-Kim summit, which Moon desperately needs if his efforts to establish peace on the Korean peninsula are to succeed.

'Just had a long and very good talk with President Moon of South Korea.

Addressing a crowd of supporters in Michigan, Trump indicated that his meeting with North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un was a decided matter, and narrowed down the possible date. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe did the same earlier this month.

"We all need to be careful and not assume anything", Freeland said in Washington when asked whether Canada has any concerns with what has emerged as the early stages of a fledgling peace process.

With the much anticipated summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in now ready for the history books, Kim's foray into the world of globe-trotting diplomacy moves on to his next high-profile appointment - with President Donald Trump.

Key parts of the event were broadcast live - another rarity for Kim - providing the South with its first really good, unvarnished look at the North Korean leader.

"This is naivety", Soo Kim, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst on North Korea, told the Sunday Times of London.

Trump's conversations with the Asian leaders came as the governments of Iran and Russian Federation reacted to Friday's historic inter-Korean Summit.

"Although I am inherently resistant toward America, people will see that I am not the kind of person who fires nukes at South Korea, the Pacific or America", he said.

He has managed to keep the United States on side with the negotiations, despite constant complications created by an erratic U.S. President who often appears to lack a consistent strategy.

Maybe that will all become clear when Kim and Trump meet.

"They want to be a normal country, a normal state to be recognized by the United States", he said during a CNN International interview. So we have peace breaking out on the Korean Peninsula - and President Trump gets some credit for that.

Kim and Moon agreed to pursue a permanent peace treaty and the complete denuclearisation of their divided peninsula. They were unwilling to engage with North Korea.

As Town noted, North Korea has previously entered into agreements with South Korea, the USA and other actors in the region it has failed to live up to.

"I feel sad to see that there are two clocks hung on the wall of the Peace House, one for Seoul time and the other for Pyongyang time", Kim said during his talks with Moon.

"I wish it were handled by another administration years ago", he said. In 2012, North Korea agreed not to test missiles and then weeks later fired one off but called it a "satellite" launch.

The reunification of the Korean peninsula would be as profound and as impactful for regional and global geopolitics as a historic compromise in the Middle East would be, leading to a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.
