CDC: Lettuce-Linked E. Coli Outbreak Spreads To Wisconsin

Three more states have reported ill people: Mississippi, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Ten have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious and potentially life-threatening type of kidney failure that can develop as a complication with this type of infection.

The growing season in Yuma, Arizona, is pretty much over, but it's possible some illnesses will still occur, said Matthew Wise of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

No deaths have been reported.

The CDC said not to eat or buy any romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona, which is the region where the FDA believes the outbreak originated. This is determined to be the sole source of whole-head romaine lettuce that sickened several subjects at an Alaska correctional facility.

In a press briefing Friday, investigators from the CDC and FDA warned consumers to continue to be careful when eating romaine lettuce. Those most at risk for E. coli illness include the very young, the very old and individuals with compromised immune systems.

The mother of a teenage girl from Wilton told KCRA 3 that her daughter is in the intensive care unit at Kaiser Permanente in Roseville suffering from kidney failure after she ate the lettuce. However, Harris said it still wasn't clear how the lettuce was contaminated or if it was contaminated at the farm or elsewhere in the supply chain. None of the romaine - either bagged, loose or served at their salad bars - is from Yuma.

Forty-six of the ill individuals have been hospitalized, a higher rate than the 30% typically seen in E. coli outbreaks. The E. coli lawyers of Marler Clark have represented thousands of victims of E. coli and other foodborne illness infections and have recovered over $650 million for clients.

At least 98 people across 22 states have contracted the bacteria from romaine lettuce as of Thursday, the agencies said in a teleconference call. Of the 87 clients the CDC has great info on, 46 (53 percent) have actually needed hospitalization, the firm kept in mind. "As we go through the distribution of product, we are looking for places of convergence where the contamination may have happened".

The only batches of contaminated romaine lettuce that have been pinpointed to a specific grower were from Harrison Farms in Yuma, Arizona.

The reported strain of E. coli, which produces poisonous substances known as Shiga toxins, can cause severe abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. "Traceback does not indicate that Harrison Farms is the source of the chopped romaine that sickened these people".
