49ers send Trent Brown to Patriots in draft-day trade

Then. another deal. The Patriots traded up from No. 63 - remember that was one of their picks to start the night - and No. 117 for Tampa Bay's No. 56 overall pick in this year's draft.

After rising through the ranks to take on a full-time starting role in 2016, Brown subsequently missed six games a year ago with a number of different injuries, primarily one to his shoulder. According to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Brown, who is recovering from labrum surgery, passed a physical on Friday morning.

The move comes after San Francisco selected Notre Dame tackle Mike McGlinchey on Thursday night with the No. 9 overall pick, ostensibly to serve as the team's starting right tackle. Protecting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo should be a priority, but this still feels a bit high for McGlinchey. He played 10 games in the 2017 season before being placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

49ers general manager John Lynch was asked if Brown was on the trading block Thursday after the team invested a first-round pick in McGlinchey.

Tartt is projected as San Francisco's starting strong safety and the 49ers opted against taking Derwin James in the first round Thursday night in part due to their belief in Tartt. He wasn't going to supplant All-Pro left tackle Joe Staley in that spot. Brown isn't expected to be healthy until training camp.

"Our whole philosophy on the whole offensive line is that we'll put the best five guys out there and however it sorts itself out, it'll sort itself out", said Nick Caserio, the Patriots' director of player personnel.

The Pats had already signed Matt Tobin and Luke Bowanko in free agency, re-signed LaAdrian Waddle, and just drafted Georgia offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn with their No. 23 overall pick.
