Number of active Facebook users increased despite scandals

It was left to committee chair Damian Collins to ask about a Politico story published during the session which suggested Zuckerberg had agreed to address MPs of the European parliament in Brussels. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was also questioned by lawmakers earlier this month about the company's data-privacy practices.

Kogan, who teaches at Cambridge University, told the committee on Tuesday that he did not sell data, and said the U.S. social media giant was scapegoating him as it was in "PR crisis mode".

Facebook shares rose after the social network reported a surprisingly strong 63 per cent rise in profit and an increase in users, with no sign that business was hurt by a scandal over the mishandling of personal data.

The Cambridge Analytica scandal unleashed calls from politicians on both sides of the Atlantic for stricter rules regarding use of user data and tighter advertisement regulation.

The video has an up-to-down vote ratio of less than 1.0, so we wouldn't be surprised if people aren't receptive to it when it's run on TV and in movie theaters this July.

In a written submission to the United Kingdom parliament's media committee, Mike Schroepfer said those wanting to run political adverts would have to complete an authorisation process and the messages would also have to display who paid for them.

Facebook failed to read the fine print on app that ultimately played a major role in the harvesting of data for tens of millions of its users.

"I don't know specifically", said Schroepfer.

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee's chairman Damian Collins accused Facebook of having tools on its platform that "work for the advertiser more than they work for the consumer".

When questioned by chairman Damian Collins, Mr Schroepfer said there was no "category-by-category opt-out" in terms of the kind of political advertising users were presented with, meaning they have no control over whether they're presented with adverts from particular campaigns or parties. "You can remove all the interests, if you want, and leave basic information: location, age, gender".

By June 2018, UK Facebook users will be able to see more about general ads too through a "view ads" button. "I put it to you that Facebook is a morality-free zone, " he said.

"It is a awful idea that a nation state is using our product to interfere in a democratic election by masquerading as citizens of the US. We were slow to understand the impact of this", he said.

The committee continually voiced frustrations that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg did not appear at the inquiry himself.
