Macron: Trump will likely scrap Iran deal

Apr 27, 2018, 01:03

Without explicitly giving his opinion about whether the United States should stick with the agreement, Mattis said that after reading the full text of the deal three times, he was struck by provisions that allow for global verification of Iran's compliance. "You don't have any background on global treaties", he said of Trump, according to the news agency.

Trump laid trans-Atlantic divisions bare, pillorying a three-year old agreement created to curb Iran's nuclear programme.

"The president - and when I say 'president, ' I'm talking about the past administration - made a frightful deal, giving $150 billion, giving $1.8 billion in cash.it's inconceivable".

His emotional appeal to USA lawmakers, as well as the broader American public, came as he capped a three-day state visit to the United States that also included closed-door negotiations on the fate of the Iran nuclear deal.

Moscow also reiterated its support, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling reporters: "We believe that no alternative exists so far" and demanding that Iran be involved in any further discussions. For French researcher Celia Belin, from the Brookings Institution think tank in Washington, Macron's proposal "is so ambitious that it looks completely impractical".

While Trump has threatened to pull troops out of Syria, Macron said the nations stand together in continued efforts there. "He is very predictable".

Macron upped his global status by standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the American president amid all the pageantry of a state visit.

Trump set a deadline of May 12 to determine the fate of the current Iran deal.

Capping a three-day visit to the United States, France's Macron told a joint meeting of Congress that the 2015 deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was not flawless but must remain in place until a replacement was forged.

Republican Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said he didn't feel Macron had rebuked President Trump. "You're the ones now who have to help to preserve and reinvent it".

"France will not leave the [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action], because we signed it", Macron told lawmakers.

"We're just citizens of the same planet", Macron said. Macron says his presidential campaign previous year was a victim of fake news, notably accusing Russian news sites RT and Sputnik. Let us not be naive on one side.

French President Emmanuel Macron extolled the Franco-American relationship on multiple fronts but issued a stern warning about the need to address climate change during his address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday.

On terrorism, the French leader praised joint efforts to combat extremism and lamented the multiple attacks in the US and Europe over the past five years, which he called a "horrific price to pay for freedom and democracy".

Adelman said Macron did well in his speech, and that he thinks the most likely path forward is a supplemental agreement to the original nuclear deal. It's the first time a president from France has addressed Congress in more than a decade, but follows a tradition of foreign leaders appearing at the US Capitol. "Therefore, distinguished members of the Congress, let us put them aside, write our own history and a future we want". Teams of American negotiators have been working with European allies for weeks on a new accord along the lines of what Macron laid out.

Macron went on to contradict Trump's positions on a number of issues. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is expected at the White House on Friday.
