More school districts cancel classes ahead of planned teacher walkouts

Furthermore, the measure would allow a school district to be able to immediately fire a teacher - without a hearing - should they violate a court order prohibiting a strike.

In addition, a public school employer would be prohibited from consenting to or condoning a strike, as well as being prohibited from paying a public school teacher for any day they participate in a strike.

The measure's chances of becoming law are miniscule - with the Democratic-controlled House unlikely to support it and some GOP lawmakers tired themselves - though it has injected another level of debate and controversy into the already simmering issue. Teachers who went on strike could be considered in contempt of court and would be subject to fines and jail time.

"I'm not sure it has 100 percent support in the Republican caucus", Grantham said.

"Teachers across the country, from West Virginia and Oklahoma to Arizona and here in Colorado, are speaking up for themselves and their students".

Two more school districts have announced they will cancel classes later this week as thousands of teachers plan to walk off the job. "Most of the teachers just want to be heard".

Teachers from the Poudre School District, Cherry Creek Schools, Adams 12 Five Star, Denver Public Schools and St. Vrain Valley will walk out that day.

DPS will join over a dozen Colorado school districts - including Aurora, which decided Monday night to also cancel classes Friday - to close their schools or release students early because of the demonstrations planned Thursday and Friday at the Capitol.

Colorado teachers make an average of $46,000 a year, ranking 46th in teacher pay, according to the National Education Association.

The pension program, called PERA in Colorado, has massive amounts of debt, though some moves made by the General Assembly this week aim to cut most of that debt over the next few decades and restore some of the asks made by teachers.
