Because the plane bound for Chicago hadn't yet departed the gate, crew members and police officers asked Garcia to evacuate the plane. An officer deployed a Taser after warning Garcia he was about to engage.
In a statementAmerican Airlines said: 'American began the process of deplaning the entire aircraft. They said after he was moved to a different seat by flight attendants, he began using racial slurs.
"We will cooperate with the Miami-Dade Police Department on this matter".
"Well you just assaulted a lady, for one". Video of the incident was posted on social media, which shows Garcia fighting against the officers and refusing to get off the plane.
It's unclear whether Garcia is feigning confusion or is genuinely perplexed by the appearance of four officers at Row 13 Seat C, but he can be seen asking repeatedly, "What is the reason why you are removing me from this plane?"
Garcia doesn't acknowledge either accusation, but the caption of one of the passenger-recorded videos says the 28-year-old Chicago resident made "racist remarks to the gate agent". One woman can be heard trying to rouse her fellow passengers with a chant of "Get him off!" He then calls the cop a "baby" and tries to grab the taser from his hands before succumbing to its effects. As he resisted, footage reportedly shows him reach for an officer's gun.
Eventually, the taser does appear to work and officers were able to take him into custody.
Kaitlin Waters, who was heading back home on the flight, said: "I was towards the front and already on the jet bridge, but multiple police had to tase this guy multiple times before he was dragged off".
Garcia was arrested on charges of battery, depriving an officer of his weapon, disorderly conduct, resisting an officer, and criminal mischief.
ABC 7 Chicago added that the incident caused the American Airlines flight to be delayed for about one hour. A spokesperson for the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center confirmed that Garcia is being held on a 6,000 dollars bond and does not now have a court date scheduled.
The airline said it was cooperating with the police investigation.
