Syria: PM to insist United Kingdom airstrikes were in 'national interest'

She said the attacks were carried out under the same legal basis used by Britain when it took part in Nato's intervention in Kosovo and for the creation of no-fly zones in Iraq in the early 1990s. She accused Syria, aided by Russian Federation, of trying to block an investigation into the gas attack by the global chemical weapons watchdog.

"The speed with which we acted was essential in co-operating with our partners to alleviate further humanitarian suffering and to maintain the vital security of our operations".

Syria and its ally Russian Federation have sought to downplay the impact of the strikes, saying Syrian air defenses shot majority down.

"The Syrian regime has reportedly been attempting to hide the evidence by searching evacuees from Douma to ensure samples are not being smuggled from this area".

"Russian state-sponsored actors are using compromised routers to conduct spoofing "man-in-the-middle" attacks to support espionage, extract intellectual property, maintain persistent access to victim networks and potentially lay a foundation for future offencive operations", the United Kingdom and U.S. warned.

Ahmet Uzumcu, the director-general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, told a meeting of the group's executive council in the Hague on Monday that his team has not yet deployed to Douma two days after arriving in Syria. But the after-the-fact debate - without a binding vote - did not satisfy angry opposition lawmakers. "Mr. Speaker, this statement serves as a reminder that the Prime Minister is accountable to this parliament not to the whims of the U.S. President", said Jeremy Corbyn, Labour Party Leader.

May denied acting at the behest of the U.S.

French President Emmanuel Macron defended the strikes and said the United States and its allies now have a wider responsibility in the country beyond battling ISIL. "We have done it because we believe it was the right thing to do - and we are not alone".

"We can't go back to a world where the use of chemical weapons becomes normalized", May said.

Also, Western capitals defended their military actions against three Syrian facilities, stressing the limited nature of the strikes.

"We are considering additional sanctions on Russian Federation and a decision will be made in the near future", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday.

Some French opposition leaders have criticized the strikes, saying they were not legitimate.

May said there wasn't time to consult lawmakers before Britain joined USA and French airstrikes on Syrian military targets on Saturday and dismissed opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn's accusation that she was acting on "the whims of the US president" as an insult to her government.

In Luxembourg, the foreign ministers of the 28 European Union countries called for a political breakthrough involving regional players to put Syria on track to a peaceful solution for its seven-year conflict. The airstrikes in Syria "will send a message to anyone who thinks they can use chemical weapons with impunity".

"There is the need to give a push to the United Nations -led process", Mogherini said.
