Weekend Box Office: Between The Rock And 'A Quiet Place'

That was still behind expectations, however.

Rampage had a big first weekend domestically, but as EW notes, it's first-weekend haul is on the low side of industry projections, which had it making in the $35 million-$40 million. The movie, costing at least $120 million to make before marketing, will need to have strong legs to make its money back. It's a ideal blending of the two, one that has us shaking.with laughter. China is the top global market for the film with a $55 million launch, while IMAX screens accounted for $10 million worldwide.

Johnson in a plot perhaps better seen than described: He plays a primatologist who befriends an albino gorilla who grows to enormous size after a rogue experiment and who then teams with Johnson to stop invading monsters.

What little noise there is in "A Quiet Place" is all the more effective for its scarcity. The movie, nabbing an A- CinemaScore and playing to an ethnically diverse audience, comes on the heels of the blockbuster success of Johnson starrer Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. One of the film's tensest scenes comes early on, when the family of four led by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt's characters are playing Monopoly and a lantern gets knocked over.

Also scaring up ticket sales this weekend is Universal and Blumhouse's Truth or Dare, which will gross about $19.1 million from 3,029 North American figures.

Holdovers complete the top five, with Warner Bros.' "Ready Player One" in fourth with $11 million in its third weekend.

The supernatural horror film, directed by Jeff Wadlow and starring Lucy Hale, Violett Beane and Sophia Ali.

Universal's comedy "Blockers" is just behind with $10.2 million, giving the $20 million comedy film a 10-day total of $37 million.
