Starbucks apologizes for arrest of 2 black men

"Creating an environment that is both safe and welcoming for everyone is paramount for every store".

Saahene said the two men reiterated that they hadn't done anything wrong and offered to call the friend they were waiting for to prove their story.

The men were released from custody at the police station after it became clear Starbucks did not want to press charges.

So what's Starbucks going to do about it?

On Thursday, Melissa DePino, a Philadelphia novelist, posted video of the incident on Twitter.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney's office, the police department and Starbucks launched separate investigations into the incident.

Addressing the issue forthrightly is important in part because Starbucks already has a complicated track record on racial issues. We are committed to fair and unbiased policing and anything less than that will not be tolerated in this department, ' he said.

At this point, the men's friend, Andrew Yaffe, showed up.

Johnson plans to join the regional vice president in Philadelphia to speak with partners, customers and community leaders as well as law enforcement.

He went on to add there would be "a thorough review" of police policies with regard to "complaints like this".

The episode prompted accusations of racism, but Ross disregarded statements of wrong doing.

That Starbucks locations might be inhospitable to people of color could lead to serious long-term economic impacts. Other customers sitting in the coffee chain could also be heard shouting "they didn't do anything".

I talked to a couple of Starbucks managers in the Bay Area who told me that they do, indeed, call the police when they feel any sort of disturbance or threat.

It's also unlikely that Starbucks would have been forced to publicly apologize for the event had the video of the wrongful arrest not been published to social media.

His friend is then seen getting cuffed behind his back and wearing a dark sweatshirt and dark jeans.

At the end of the video, a white man identified as real estate investor Alan Yaffe can be seen telling police he was meeting the two men and calling their arrest "ridiculous". "What did they do wrong?"

On Friday, Starbucks issued an apology, followed by a longer statement on Saturday.

"We apologize to the two individuals and our customers for what took place at our Philadelphia store on Thursday", the tweet states.

Starbucks does not have a companywide policy on asking members of the public to leave, said the company official. "We will learn from this and be better". The fund owned 367,975 shares of the coffee company's stock after buying an additional 101,962 shares during the period.

Still, he said officers had acted according to protocol. An employee called 911 on them after they refused to leave.

The city's police commissioner defended the arrests, saying employees said the men wanted to use the restroom but were denied because they hadn't bought anything.

The two men had not ordered immediately upon arriving, as they were still waiting for Yaffe. "We're done with that", an officer replies. "You're only a $45,000 a year employee", Ross stated in the video.

"So they then asked these two males to leave", Ross says. Numerous other customers followed the police out of the store protesting on the men's behalf because nobody could understand what they had done wrong.

"I will say that as an African-American male, I am very aware of implicit bias", he continued.
