Stoltenberg: All NATO allies fully support joint military action in Syria

While NATO has issued a strong statement of support for its three allies which launched a military strike against Syria over the suspected chemical attack of last weekend, the United Nations called for restraint. The attack evoked large-scale criticism of President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO Secretary General, stated that he supported the airstrikes in Syria conducted by the US and its allies.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the attack was a "crime" and declared Theresa May, Donald trump and Emmanuel Macron "criminals".

Despite Putin's condemnation, the United Nations Security Council just voted to reject Russia's resolution condemning "aggression" against Syria by the U.S. and its allies. Stoltenberg's statement was made public on the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation website.

In separate calls, the Prime Minister spoke to the United States and French presidents to discuss the offensive.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation will convene an emergency meeting on Syria to discuss the USA -led airstrikes against the Assad regime in Syria, an official from the alliance told Anadolu Agency on Saturday. They also made clear that their military action was limited to the Syrian regime's facilities enabling the production and employment of chemical weapons.

"No. Actually on the contrary, I think if we have just been silent, and accepted the use of chemical weapons, it would have undermined the efforts to find a political solution".
