Jeremy Corbyn: UK of 'waiting for instructions' from Trump on Syria

U.K. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn warned Friday that British military intervention in Syria risks escalating an "already devastating conflict" and accused Theresa May's government of "waiting for instructions" from the US president on how to respond to Saturday's alleged chemical weapons attack.

The fact-finding mission from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was expected to head to Douma, where the suspected attack took place and where Russian Federation said rebels had now capitulated to government control.

Ministers should take their proposals, such as they are, to parliament.

The prime minister, who spoke to Trump about the need to deter chemical weapon use in Syria in a phone call Thursday, is facing pressure from all sides to seek the backing of parliament.

"Labour say this would incentivise local authorities to create bus companies that are publicly run for passengers rather than for profit, which, according toresearch conducted by Transport for Quality of Life, could save the taxpayer £276m a year".

The small Northern Irish political party that props up her government said May was justified in taking such action.

Mr Corbyn also slammed ministers for launching strikes before giving MPs a say, saying Ms May "should have sought parliamentary approval, not trailed after Donald Trump".

It said they all agreed with her on "the importance of restoring the global norm that the use of chemical weapons is never acceptable".

Donald Trump, Theresa May and Emmanuel Macron defended the attack.

But rival politicians and some Conservative colleagues have called for a parliamentary vote before any British involvement.

Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has slammed Premier Theresa May for not consulting the parliament before allowing the British military to join the US and France in carrying out coordinated airstrikes in Syria.

He added: "Britain should press for an independent UN-led investigation of last weekend's horrific chemical weapons attack so that those responsible can be held to account".

He said it was "deeply alarming" to see the return of chemical weapons to the battlefield in Syria and the airstrikes was the "right thing to do" in "settling the determination to ensure these weapons cannot be used".

Russia, which backs Assad's regime, described reports of chemical weapons as a "provocation".

Senior figures from Russia have warned of a Russian response to a U.S. attack.

On Friday, campaigners from the Stop the War Coalition were due to hand in a letter to Downing Street signed by MPs, trade unionists, celebrities and academics urging Mrs May not to take military action in Syria.

Amid conflicting tweets about the timing of any retaliation, United States president Donald Trump said on Thursday that an attack on Syria could take place "very soon or not so soon at all".

That view was echoed by Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable, who insisted that Ms May should have sought the approval of MPs before following the USA into Syria.
