Arsenal draws Atletico Madrid in Europa League semifinals

In addition to the Champions League semifinal draw on Friday, the Europa League semi draw also took place with the two biggest contenders remaining in the cup facing off in the semifinals.

Arsenal will host Los Rojiblancos at the Emirates Stadium on April 26 and play the second leg at Wanda Metropolitano on May 3.

Wenger, whose side play Man United away in the Premier League between the two semi-final legs, had identified Atletico, Champions League finalists in 2014 and 2016, as the most unsafe side in the draw.

Atletico, who dropped down from the Champions League following the group stage, progressed at the expense of Sporting Lisbon, despite a 1-0 defeat in Portugal on Thursday evening.

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech believes winning the Europa League would be a sign of progression for the Gunners this season, following an otherwise indifferent domestic campaign.

Liverpool FC are through to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in 10 years.

In previous rounds the Spanish side have run to comfortable victories, often finishing the tie by the first leg with hefty victories.

Arsenal reached the last four after surviving a scare against CSKA Moscow in Thursday's quarter-final second leg in the Russian capital.

The Spain worldwide was withdrawn in the second half of the 1-0 quarter-final second-leg loss to the Portuguese side in Lisbon and was sent for further tests.

The other semifinal will see Marseille take on Red Bull Salzburg.

Extra incentive for Marseille - the final is in Lyon, France.
