Sen. Cory Gardner says Trump vows to protect marijuana industry

President donaldtrump has reportedly lent his support to a US senator from Colorado, asserting to endorse legislation which "safeguards states' rights" on legalized bud. Cory Gardner, a Republican, " said'd received a promise from the president on the states' rights' concern earlier this past week.

"With the President now reiterating this commitment, it is time for Congress to do its part and swiftly move forward bipartisan legislation that explicitly provides states with the authority and autonomy to set their own marijuana policies absent the fear of federal incursion". Cory Gardner of Colorado announced Friday that Trump made the marijuana pledge to him in a Wednesday night conversation.

Gardner was angered in January when Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, revoked the Obama-era Cole memo that discouraged the federal government from interfering with states that had legalized marijuana.

"Given that advertising marketing campaign, President Trump has continuously supported states' rights to resolve for themselves how best to technique marijuana", Gardner talked about.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said during Friday's press briefing that the president spoke with Gardner today and yesterday.

Gardner says he will now allow those nominations to proceed. "My colleagues and I are continuing to work diligently on a bipartisan legislative solution that can pass Congress and head to the president's desk to deliver on his campaign position", Gardner said in a statement.

The co-directors of the 2012 Amendment 64 campaign that legalized marijuana for adults in Colorado, Mason Tvert and Brian Vicente, have issued statements in response to the news.

Opponents of legalization said they were concerned.

"We should hope for the best, but not take anything for granted", Blumenauer, a founder of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, said in a statement.

Gardner noted that Trump had stated during his campaign that he had supported states' rights to decide how to approach marijuana. "I'm a states person, it should be up to the states, absolutely", he told one television interviewer in Colorado in 2016.

He singled out Colorado, the first state in the nation to allow recreational marijuana sales. Colorado has taken great strides toward replacing the illegal marijuana market with a responsibly regulated system.

In retaliation, Gardner used his power as a senator to prevent consideration of any nominees for the Department of Justice - an extraordinary step for a senator to use against an administration run by another member of his party.

Sessions once said he thought the Ku Klux Klan was "OK until I learned that they smoked pot", though he later claimed to be joking.

After Trump selected Sessions, a former federal prosecutor and also US senator from Alabama, as his attorney general, bud fans girded for a crackdown.

The president has frequently criticized Sessions, particularly over his decision to recuse himself from oversight of the federal investigation into potential collusion between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

Inside his Friday statement, Gardner mentioned he'd released until he gained & ldquo; the full devotion that the guidelines of this Cole Memo wouldbe honored, a few holds, but abandoned others in place.

Legislation to protect states where marijuana is legal is still being drafted.
