Majority of Americans say something like the Holocaust could happen again

And 58 percent of Americans believe that something like the Holocaust could happen again, the survey found.

The study, which was commissioned by The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany and conducted by Schoen Consulting, also found that 11 percent of US adults overall haven't heard of the Holocaust or aren't sure if they did.

A uniform of an Auschwitz survivor is displayed on December 9, 2004, at the Jewish Museum in London.

The survey found that almost half of all Americans - 41 percent - couldn't identify Auschwitz, a concentration camp where an estimated 1.1 million Jews and minorities were killed at the hands of Nazis during World War II. Moreover, two-thirds of millennials (66%) could not identify what Auschwitz was.

Poles should be comforted by the survey's finding regarding the primary location of the events tied to the Holocaust: Most U.S. Adults (84%) know that the Holocaust occurred in Germany, but only 37% identified Poland as a country where the Holocaust took place, despite the fact that more than half (3.5 million) of the Jews killed were from Poland, and the fact that the vast majority of Nazi death camps were located there. A recent survey found that 66 percent of millennials do not know what Auschwitz was. The Nazis also murdered millions of Eastern European civilians, Soviet prisoners of war, disabled people, homosexuals and political prisoners.

"The Holocaust, known in Hebrew as 'Shoah, ' was the culmination of the Nazi regime's 'Final Solution to the Jewish Question, ' an attempt to eradicate the Jewish population in Europe", the statement said.

The statement continued: "By the end, the Nazis and their conspirators had murdered 6 million men, women, and children, simply because they were Jews".

Despite the worrying figures, 93 percent of those asked think the Holocaust should be taught in schools, while 96 percent believe that the genocide happened.

The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.

At an exhibit and gathering at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Lower Manhattan, more than 400 Jewish students met in groups with Holocaust survivors from Austria, Germany and Poland who now live in the NY area.

The executive vice president of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, which seeks restitution for Holocaust victims and their heirs and commissioned the February survey of 1,350 respondents, says the gaps in understanding are "troubling" given that some 400,000 Holocaust survivors are still living. "We are alarmed that today's generation lacks some of the basic knowledge about these atrocities".
