Trump Promises Strike on Syria and Warns Russia Against Backing Assad

Air traffic control agency Eurocontrol has warned airlines to exercise caution in the eastern Mediterranean due to the possible launch of air strikes into Syria in next 72 hours.

Trump was reacting to a warning from Russian Federation on Tuesday that any US missiles fired at Syria over the deadly assault on a rebel enclave would be shot down and the launch sites targeted.

Trump has now cancelled this week's planned trip to Latin America "to oversee the American response to Syria and to monitor developments around the world", according to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.

Seven nations - including the United States - voted against a Russian resolution that would have set up an investigation overseen by the Security Council.

The crisis, precipitated by allegations that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad's regime perpetrated a chemical attack, comes as Trump does rhetorical battle with a US Justice Department which in recent days seized documents from his personal lawyer.

The United Nations Security Council rejected a counter resolution drafted by Russian Federation on investigating the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said before the vote that her delegation had tried hard to incorporate Russian proposals in the draft that would not compromise the impartiality of investigation. A furious Trump, who in the last month has escalated his attacks on Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe, said Monday from the White House that it was a "disgrace" that the Federal Bureau of Investigation "broke into" his lawyer's office. "Does any of that sound independent or impartial?" she asked.

The battle for influence between Washington and Moscow is now being played out in the United Nations, where both powers have proposed resolutions to investigate the alleged attack.

"Almost everyone I know in Damascus is up and waiting for news on possible United States strikes, you can cut the tension with a knife".

The council voted two more times on draft texts put forward by Russian Federation, but both measures failed to garner the 9 votes required for adoption, laying bare divisions at the top United Nations body over Syria.

Russian lawmakers said Moscow would view a US airstrike on Syria as a war crime that could trigger a direct military clash between the two powers.

That panel concluded that the Syrian air force dropped the deadly nerve agent sarin on the village of Khan Sheikhun in April 2017, killing almost 100 people.

Seven Iranians were among the estimated 14 people killed in the missile strike, and a senior Iranian official visiting Damascus said the attack "will not remain unanswered".

"The pretext of a chemical attack has become well known to everybody and is a flimsy and unsubstantiated excuse to target Syria", the ministry statement said.

"Probably the last attempt to stage a chemical weapons attack in Eastern Ghouta was made", Russian Lt. Gen. Viktor Poznikhir said.

Washington has promised "forceful" response to Saturday's alleged chemical weapons attack that killed at least 40 people in Douma, Syria.

The global air traffic control agency Eurocontrol has warned airlines to exercise caution in the eastern Mediterranean due to the possible launch of air strikes into Syria in the next 72 hours.
