Simbine upstages Blake in 100-meter dash at Commonwealth Games

Simbine said: "I wasn't focused on him (Blake), I was focused on myself and making sure I got out fast and that I got to the 50m as quickly as I could".

Philip said: "I'm gutted, it was awful. That's just shocking to be honest, I should have done better than that".

The 18-year-old Cikamatana wept openly as the Fijian anthem played at a Commonwealth Games for only the fourth time - the first since 2002.

Bruintjies produced the best performance of his career finishing ahead of former world champion Yohan Blake winning the silver medal in 10.17.

Despite Blake's blistering times in the lead up and suggestions he could go under 10 seconds in the final, Simbine knew he could upset the second fastest man in history. The sprinter produced his customary top-end speed after a sluggish start to cross the line in first place.

"I'm disappointed because I've been feeling good".

His progress was delayed by a string of injuries and he was faced with a rising tide of young rivals such as Canada's Andre de Grasse and American Christian Coleman, plus the return of Justin Gatlin.

"I got out and didn't see anyone".

"When you have a disgusting start like that you have to keep to your race plan but he threw it away and began racing like a kid in the schoolyard", four-time Olympic champion Michael Johnson told BBC Sport. "I believed in myself that I could get the gold medal", he told BBC Sport.

Teenager Eileen Cikamatana became the first Fijian woman to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal as the island nations dominated.

"I fought for me, for my country, and for my gold medal", Mao said.

Wales' Hollie Arnold won the F56 javelin with a world record throw of 44.43m. That rivalry will always be there.

Hubbard added: "I think you have to be true to yourself and I hope in this case that's what I've done".

South Africa's Caster Semenya looked in imperious form as she qualified fastest for Tuesday's 1500m final.

With Usain Bolt enjoying his retirement, Blake was well fancied to fly the flag for Jamaica in the men's 100m final.

Uganda's Stella Chessang won a closely contested women's 10,000m in 31:45.30, and world champion Tomas Walsh heaved 21.41m to win the men's shot put for New Zealand.

The most popular win of the evening came in the T38 100m where Australian Evan O'Hanlon tore to gold in 11.09 seconds, bringing the Carrara Stadium to its feet. The path to gold was made smoother for Simbine when England runner Adam Gemili, a 4x100m relay gold medallist at the London world championships, pulled out before the final with a thigh injury.
