Possibilities are evident for AU golf recruitment after Reed's Masters win

Much closer on the calendar is the Ryder Cup in France at the end of September.

Expectations that Woods could contend in his first major championship since 2015 fueled an explosion in sports betting and a surge in television ratings.

If he wasn't already a lock, he is now. All four trailed Reed by four strokes. However, on some of the trickiest greens in the world, Reed's strokes gained: putting average at Augusta National last week was 1.98, which was third-best in the field. Ten years removed from a major title, at 42 he might still be a factor but his long game is still a work in progress as he plays his way back after spinal fusion surgery.

That's why his reputation was built more on playing for his flag than for himself.

All four men's Majors are now in American hands, not to mention the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup. "I've played in two final groups in the last seven years, I've had five top 10s".

He will also be invited to host the Champions Dinner next year, held the week of The Masters, and can attend the annual meal every year thereafter. He had stood in there against Spieth, who had a chance on this back-nine Sunday to shoot the lowest score - 63 - in Masters history and maybe even better than that if a couple of putts that burned the hole had dropped on the way to the clubhouse.

They love him in red, white and blue. He shot a 3-over-par 75 on Friday and shot even par in the third round. He has all the shots, and his bogey-free round on Saturday showed he had the nerve, too.

McIlroy, three shots back and playing in the final pair with Reed, had to get off to a quick start and he did just that, chopping two shots off the deficit in just two holes. Reed was solid as ever.

Asked about not being able to share the joy of victory with his parents, he batted off the question. You feel like you have a whole nation on your back. You gotta route for an alum and it's his first major win so why not route for a guy and give him a chance to win instead of a guy that's won two three times.

"Patrick has got a three-shot lead", McIlroy told reporters Saturday. "He doesn't have the prettiest swing", Love said at Hilton Head Island ahead of this week's PGA Tour event, the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town.

They won't forget him now. Reed made a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 12.

All those roars Sunday at the Masters, they were like thunderbolts cracking all around him. Just eight greens in regulation over the final round will never get it done. His 8-foot par putt for a record-tying 63 narrowly missed on the right. "It looks like just grinding out par on the weekend out here", Spieth said. You miss it just a touch here, it gets magnified. "It's just a way of God basically saying, 'Let's see if you have it.' Everyone knows you have it physically with the talent. Can you handle the ups and downs throughout the round?"

For what it's worth, Reed has five different companies in his bag: Ping (driver), Nike (3-wood), Titleist (3-iron, wedge), Callaway/Odyssey (irons, putter) and Artisan (wedges).

Besides the Women's tournament, Augusta will continue to host the Drive, Chip and Putt national finals, featuring 40 boys and 40 girls ages 7 to 15 for a competition the Sunday before the Masters. This is the same amount as the victor received a year ago.

"He's fearless", Coach O'Keefe says about Reed. Rory just needs to sharpen things up. "And that's what I'm trying to do".

We're still early into Masters Sunday, but so far, Augusta's delivering.

He will always be a Masters champion.
