Trump Says US 'Cannot Allow' Syrian Chemical Weapons Attacks

The attack in the city of Douma, which the US and European Union also said was likely carried out by the Syrian regime, seems poised to elicit a military response from US President Donald Trump, who called it a "heinous" crime.

"But we can't let atrocities like we all witnessed. we can't let that happen in our world. especially when we're able to because of the power of the United States, the power of our country, we're able to stop it".

Later in the evening, he held a meeting on Syria with his top military and national security officials.

"We are making a decision as to what we do with respect to the terrible attack that was made near Damascus, and it will be met forcefully, and when I'm not saying because I don't like to talk about timing".

Moscow meanwhile warned Washington on Sunday of carrying out a "military intervention on fabricated pretexts" in Syria.

"We are quick to condemn chemical weapons in the Security Council, but then Russian Federation prevents any action, vetoing five resolutions on this issue alone", his USA counterpart Nikki Haley responded.

Israel does not typically comment on its operations in Syria, and it is unclear whether the missile attack was linked to the alleged use of chemical weapons.

"Either way, the United States will respond", she warned.

The president has said a decision on the USA response is imminent, and he is considering holding Syria's allies Iran and Russian Federation accountable.

And how would Russian President Vladimir Putin likely respond to a United States military strike in Syria? "So we're looking at that very, very strongly and very seriously".

"We have a lot of options, militarily", he said, with out giving specifics.

Mrs May sidestepped a question on whether Parliament would be recalled from recess to debate any military intervention.

The White House later qualified his remarks to say there was no timetable for withdrawal from Syria.

The administration's inaction even prompted The New York Times' editorial board to pen an opinion piece demanding Trump push for an end to the attacks. "There's no need to go to there, the Prime Minister should take direct action then go to Parliament afterwards". "We just have to hope that Moscow will not overreact when the strikes come".

"We must not overlook Russian Federation and Iran's roles in enabling the Assad regime's murderous destruction", she said. He added of Russian President Vladimir Putin, "everybody's going to pay a price - he will, everybody will".

"We are studying that situation extremely closely".

The attack in Douma occurred late on Saturday amid a resumed offensive by Syrian government forces after the collapse of a truce with the Army of Islam rebel group.

Calling Syrian President Bashar al-Assad a "monster", Ms Haley said that if the UN Security Council acts or not, "either way, the United States will respond". At least 40 people were killed in that assault, including families found in their homes and shelters, opposition activists and local rescuers said.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Tuesday he is outraged by the reported attack, and that the use of chemical weapons would be a violation of global law.

Trump - who a year ago launched a missile strike on a Syrian air base after sarin was used in the town of Khan Sheikhun - warned after the latest accusations that there would be a "big price to pay".

The Syrian-American Medical Society said more than 500 people were brought to medical centres in Douma, in the Eastern Ghouta region, near the capital Damascus, with symptoms "indicative of exposure to a chemical agent".
