Torres to leave Atletico Madrid at season-end

Torres scored 76 league goals during his first five seasons at Atletico and after making an emotional return, he had hoped to retire at the club. Perhaps it is time to make way for others.

The inability to sign players hindered the team as manager Diego Simeone was unable to get rid of players he might not have wanted while at the same time being unable to sign the ones he would have preferred.

"It has not been an easy decision, it has been tough to take it".

Torres would have preferred greater clarity from the club over their position on his future.

This was confirmed during a press conference on Monday by the player whose contract expires in the summer.

"My relationship with Simeone is normal, it's professional", Torres said.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker is out of contract in the summer and with his first-team opportunities already limited, he's made a decision to move on.

Atletico face Eibar on home soil in their final game of La Liga's 2017/18 campaign, and it is this game that will see Los Rojiblancos give Torres a reception he deserves for his services to them. Subs: Angel Correa (for Vitolo, 61) 6, Gabi (for Costa, 71) 6, Kevin Gameiro (for Partey, 82) 6.

Torres is fifth on the list of all-time top goalscorers for Atletico - banging in 126 times in 375 games.

Torres' second spell at the club has been hard at times and this season he has scored just two goals in 20 appearances, starting only three games. He returned to Atletico in 2015 after a brief stint with AC Milan.

Torres was struggling at Chelsea when Atleti won the league four years ago, meaning the only trophy he has lifted with the club is a Segunda Division title in 2002.

"It was because of what I said [about Manchester United]".

"I want the club to keep improving and that's why I'm staying because I think we can keep growing", Simeone told beIN Sports.

On the worldwide stage Torres has also shone, helping Spain win the UEFA European Championship twice-he netted in both finals-and the FIFA World Cup.
