School bus plunges off cliff in India, killing 27

Eyewitnesses said the driver, a 65-year-old army veteran, lost control on a sharp curve and the vehicle fell into the 200-feet deep gorge at Cheli village, some 300 km from the state capital Shimla. Kangra district officials fear the death toll may rise as 11 other children have been injured in the worst school bus accident in the region in recent years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was anguished by the loss of lives in the latest incident.

All the students were below the age of 10; bus driver, 2 teachers also dead.

Earlier, SDM Nurpur Abid Hussain said 20 bodies had been recovered with the help of local volunteers and police. At least a dozen people were taken to area hospitals.

"Extremely saddened to learn about the tragic school bus accident in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh". "We will get an inquiry done into the cause of the accident", said Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur.

Some children are still trapped inside the mangled bus, news agency IANS reported.

Lives are frequently lost in India's remote, mountainous northern reaches, where narrow hairpin turns cut paths into the steep Himalayan foothills.

Casey said initial reports were that the boy was a passenger on the bus.

The state government has announced 500,000 rupees ($7,700) in compensation for each victim's family.

Rescue work has been initiated and those injured are being admitted in nearby hospitals, said Sandeep Kumar, the deputy commissioner of Kangra district.
