Red Bull a lot better than it looked in FP2 - Ricciardo

Verstappen was certainly hoping to make the most of the opportunities available to him on race day.

His best effort on Friday was 0.655 seconds slower than Raikkonen, however, with at least some of that down to the 33-year-old running into traffic on his flying lap.

Defending champion Lewis Hamilton had to settle for fifth.

Kimi Raikkonen has topped the leaderboard ahead of Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel in the second practice session for the Bahrain Grand Prix.

"We were decent yesterday", Daniel Ricciardo said after qualifying fifth, which will become fourth with Hamilton's penalty. "I'll try to improve the feeling and balance to put myself in the best position possible".

"We don't think we'll have to take a grid penalty, so we'll see".

"We definitely have got some work to do", Hamilton said. "I think it's never happened to me before in my career, something like that".

"It was closer than expected so far as the gap to pole was four-tenths which is encouraging but still frustrating to be at the tail end of that", Ricciardo said. "We know that in the race we are still struggling a little bit on this".

Pierre Gasly went seventh quickest in his Honda-powered Toro Rosso, ahead of Renault's Carlos Sainz and the second Haas of Kevin Magnussen.

His time in the Friday afternoon session was not representative of his actual pace, however, as Hamilton locked up in his Mercedes while on his fastest lap before then reporting his tires were "dead". With Bahraini ownership, McLaren had many of their key shareholders in their garage on Saturday but could only qualify 13th and 14th with Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne respectively.

It all leads up to Sunday's race, which starts at 4.10pm BST and where Hamilton and Vettel will again expect to lead the pack.

Overtaking - or the lack of it - was on the agenda after the Australian Grand Prix, with Albert Park once again proving to be a notoriously hard track to pass on with the current generation of vehicle.

The Dutch driver got out and helped stewards wheel the vehicle back to the team garage.

The American-owned team showed a surprising turn of speed in Melbourne but had to stomach the disappointment of seeing both their cars retire while on course for a best-ever result.
