Narine stars as KKR edge past RCB

When RCB last played against KKR at the Eden Gardens in 2017, RCB suffered an embarrassing defeat after being bowled out for a paltry 49 in 9.4 overs - the lowest team total of the tournament so far. Then after Narine's wicket, Rana combined with the new KKR captain Dinesh Karthik to steady the innings.

KKR go into the match with happy memories of skittling out RCB for the lowest ever IPL total (49) here past year, while in the return leg Narine smashed the tournament's fastest fifty (17 ball 54 ) as they made a double over Kohli's side in 2017.

In the process, Virat Kohli's team continued its poor run in the IPL despite the shake-up they did to their batting-heavy squad in the auctions.

Sunil Narine has increasingly proven his utility as a batsman in recent years. However, it's not so big (area wise) that Karthik would worry to chase the target.

He fell two balls later, chopping Umesh onto his stumps, but with the equation now reading 112 off 88 balls, his job was done.

A new-look Kolkata Knight Riders under new skipper Dinesh Karthik overcame the jitters to notch up a convincing four-wicket win over heavyweights Royal Challengers Bangalore and make a positive start to their campaign in the Indian Premier League here today. In all, RCB extracted 52 off the Powerplay for the loss of Quinton de Kock, and McCullum looked for the boundary at every opportunity before his dismissal for 43 in the ninth over. Kohli and AB de Villiers will once again form a strong top-order with 2,212 runs together in 53 innings, including seven century stands.

Kohli (31 off 33) played the second fiddle.

First, he should be praised for his masterstroke of giving ball to part-timer Nitish Rana when AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli were going tremendously well.

In came De Villiers and took the bowlers to the cleaners in his trademark fashion. Looking forward to have good balanced performances instead of relying on just one aspect.

Mitchell Starc has been ruled out of the tournament with a tibial bone stress fracture in his right leg, and the Knight Riders coach Jacques Kallis has pinned his faith on Tom Curran, the bowling allrounder from England, to fill in ably. He smashed 44 off just 23 balls but threw his wicket away to the part-timer Nitish Rana. De Villiers mistimed Rana and Mitchell Johnson took the catch between long on and deep mid wicket.
