Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall will touch down in Australia today, for a whirlwind tour of the country that includes high teas, glitzy receptions and a quick side trip to Vanuatu.

Juliet Rieden, The Australian Women's Weekly's editor-at-large and royal correspondent, is now on tour with Charles and Camilla in Queensland as the royal couple attend various events as part of their commitment to opening the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

The royal couple kicked off their visit with a formal ceremony at Old Government House, including an inspection of the guard and a 21 gun-salute.

The couple also created plenty of smiles when they visited Lady Cilento Children's Hospital.

The visit starting Wednesday equals his mother Queens Elizabeth II's tally of 16 royal tours of the former British colony and comes as the monarch winds back her worldwide travel commitments. This is to "uphold Her Majesty's vision and passion for the Commonwealth".

Tony Abbott has accused Paul Keating of fabricating claims Prince Charles wants Australia to become a republic. On Friday, the Duke will travel to Bundaberg to attend a community celebration. He will then attend a function celebration the 90th anniversary of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and visit the Daintree Rainforest.

On their Facebook event for the protest WAR wrote: "Each time "Australia" has hosted the games thousands of Aboriginal, Torres Strait islanders as well as other groups who have been oppressed by the crown have united to resist colonial activity and authority".

Although Camilla will accompany the prince, she cuts her trip short.

Camilla also shared her enthusiasm about tonight's opening ceremony with waiting fans, reportedly telling one: 'I hope you're going to watch the opening ceremony at the Games tonight'.

"She is going to the games, which she regards as a very important part of the tour", the spokesman continued. Pictured: Prince Charles and Camilla arrive for a party at Windsor Castle on February 10, 2005.
