Hands-free Alexa coming to Amazon Fire tablets

Don't feel like buying an Amazon Echo? Technically the feature was already there in the Fire HD 10 but now Amazon is rolling it out to its smaller brethren. Currently, to activate Alexa on the Amazon Fire 7 or Fire HD 8, you pick up either tablet and tap the Home button until a blue line appears.

Amazon Key debuted late previous year in select markets as a suite of features centered around in-home delivery for Prime members, and now all of its functionalities except for in-home delivery itself are available nationwide, the company said Thursday.

If you only have one Echo, you can take advantage of the feature by using the Alexa app, provided you have an Android phone or Fire tablet.

This update is compatible with Fire 7 and Fire 8 HD tablets running 5.6.1.0 version software and above. And given that the Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 both have displays, they are capable of accessing video feeds and other video content that you might be used to viewing with say, an Echo Show.

Which is the Alexa Skill you find most useful? At that point, you can ask Alexa to handle your request.

This gives the tablets the same abilities as the retailer's Echo range of smart speakers, although audio quality from the slates won't be as good as the dedicated devices. Amazon is rolling out the feature in a software update this week. Also, if you're interested in playing music, the speakers won't sound as well as a full-sized Echo.
