Aggressive Containment Combats Spread of Nightmare Bacteria

In all, the CDC's Antibiotic Resistance Lab identified 221 bacteria that it dubbed "unusual", meaning the bugs could not be killed by any or most antibiotics, are uncommon in certain geographic regions or the entire U.S or are able to spread resistance to other bacteria.

"Essentially, we found nightmare bacteria in your backyard", said Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the first nine months of the year, more than 5,770 samples were tested for these "nightmare bacteria", as CDC calls them, and one quarter were found to have genes that make them hard to treat and easy to share their resistance tricks with other types of bacteria.

Two million USA patients get infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria each year, and 23,000 die.

Health authorities state these brand-new germs need to be consisted of rapidly, lest they share their antibiotic-resistance genes with other possibly more unsafe bacteria.

Schuchat added that in 9 months of surveillance in the US and Puerto Rico, 5,776 samples of highly resistant germs were tested.

Schuchat said she was surprised by the numbers in the report, according to CNN.

Health departments using the containment approach have conducted infection control assessments and colonization screenings within 48 hours of finding unusual resistance, and have reported no further transmission during follow-up over several weeks. "They should work closely with the health department to ensure that other facilities that might be at risk for these organisms-for example, one where the patient might have previously stayed-are also contacted", he concluded.

The CDC's containment technique requires: fast recognition of resistance; examining infection controls in healthcare centers; screening clients without signs who might bring and spread out the bacterium; and continued infection-control evaluations till the germs have actually stopped spreading out.

Health officials say these new bacteria must be contained quickly, lest they share their antibiotic-resistance genetics with other potentially more unsafe germs.

Likening the spread of the bacteria to wildfire, officials said healthcare facilities and public health agencies need to have effective containment strategies in place.

Germs will continuously find ways to resist new and existing antibiotics; stopping new resistance from developing is not now possible.

Now, the CDC is joining that call in a report on the prevalence of these bacteria and the effectiveness of its new, additional strategy for preventing their spread.

"It's identifying problems with great precision and initiating the appropriate response with the local health department and hospital staff". These germs were reportedly resistant to almost all, if not all, antibiotics used in the study.
