Nicolas Sarkozy to stand trial for corruption

In this photo taken Wednesday March 28, 2018, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy leaves after a ceremony for late Lt. Col. Arnaud Beltrame at the Hotel des Invalides in Paris.

Sarkozy appealed that order and a decision is pending.

The latest case against the former French president emerged from an inquiry into his alleged receipt of millions of dollars of campaign contributions from Colonel Gaddafi, the late Libyan dictator.

Sarkozy has faced multiple corruption investigations since leaving office in 2012. Sarkozy's team said he will appeal against the decision.

Investigators examining allegations that Sarkozy's campaign was funded by Libya began to suspect that he was monitoring the probe using a network of informants.

Sarkozy's lawyer Thierry Herzog and former magistrate Gilbert Azibert will also face trial on charges of "corruption, trading in influence and concealment of breach of professional secrecy".

He already faces trial on separate charges of illicit pending overruns during his failed re-election campaign in 2012.

The case is known in France as the Bygmalion affair, after the name of the firm that allegedly provided false invoices to Mr Sarkozy's party rather than the campaign.

Mr. Sarkozy, who has argued repeatedly that the investigations against him are politically motivated, was infuriated that investigators had wiretapped conversations with his lawyer, but the appellate court ruled in 2016 that the taps were legal.

Sarkozy's predecessor, Jacques Chirac, was convicted in 2011, after his retirement, of misusing public funds to keep political allies in phantom jobs.
