Housewife gets 8 years' jail for abusing maid

Rozita Mohd Ali (left, in black) who was freed on a good behaviour bond for abusing her maid, appears in the Shah Alam High Court today for a review hearing of her sentence.

He asked the court to release Momberg on bail while she lodges her appeal.

"Looking at our courts and the number of increases in respect to these offences, it is time a loud message is sent to every race, every person in the country, that this can't go on any longer", Baba said.

She used the K-word almost 50 times during a racist tirade after a smash-and-grab incident.

In pleading for a light sentence, the accused, who was unrepresented, said he was disabled and worked in a factory for only RM30 a day.

In a sentencing memorandum filed last week, Assistant Public Defender Marny Hill argued that her client shot Eric Krafft only after feeling threatened by his father's words and behavior.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says the Vicki Momberg judgement sets a precedent for other racial related cases. This is the first time someone asking for assistance was abusive to every body.

In her judgment, magistrate Pravina Raghoonandan told the court that Momberg's racist rant would not be accommodated.

Vicki Momberg, who was caught on camera racially abusing a police officer, has been found guilty of four counts of crimen injuria.

In June 2017, the Equality Court awarded damages of R100 000 to Constable Clement Mkhondo after he was verbally assaulted by Momberg. "After being found guilty of hate speech, Ms Momberg failed to comply with the Equality Court order and the SAHRC is now pursuing a contempt of court order against Ms Momberg", Smith said.
