Rare immediately backpedals on charging gold for deaths in Sea of Thieves

Rare's plan was to implement a new system in the game that would require players pay a gold toll upon dying.

The notes for Sea of Thieves' first big update have been released, an update that's almost 20GB depending on the platform.

However, after player outcry, Rare has reversed the decision and will not bring the death tax into the game. Developer Rare is now killing off one of those brainstormed gameplay changes before it comes to pass, canceling a planned "death cost" after intense fan feedback.

Today will see Sea of Thieves undergo a maintenance window (between 9am and 2pm on March 27), during which an update will become available to download. "Rates are dependent on the cause of death, so the more avoidable the death, the less patience the Captain will have when we enable this feature!"

The feedback was immediately and nearly overwhelmingly negative.

Other fans argued against the addition for similar reasons. The Xbox One Edition includes the full original game and the popular After Dark expansion, allowing players to plan and design for their cities' nightlife and tourist attractions.

The announcement of the Death Cost was initially made in the release notes that were revealed last week but players were quick to show their concern over this feature via social media. If you want to get into details, there is a more specific merchant cheat sheet that can help you get more important locations.

Neate admits that the developer "messed up with the messaging around this, and it's now gone". Neate went on to thank players for "the honest feedback & discussion on this" subject.
