JNU sexual harassment case: Accused professor detained

Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested and questioned Professor Atul Johri of Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) following accusations of sexual harassment against him.

The arrest came as JNU students continued to protest over the delay in taking action against the professor.

Earlier in the day, Johri was detained for questioning. Johri be immediately removed from all these positions, as the allegations against him bring great disrepute to the university.

At a press meet held on the campus last week, the woman students of the SLS issued a statement that said, "The professor often makes sexually-coloured remarks, open demands for sex and comments on the figure of nearly every girl".

"There is a financial nexus between the professor and the administration". Police said Johri had, in fact, attributed the allegations to the complainant not having enough attendance. "So they're targeting me".

"Johri's statement during questioning in eight FIRs and similar complaints by other students were video recorded", a police officer said. In a petition to DCP (South-West)'s office, the teachers said police chose to register only one FIR based on only one of the nine complaints filed so far. "By not taking action against him, the university is granting him an undue favour by delaying his suspension", said a student from SLS.

"A notice has been issued to the professor to cooperate in the police investigation. The students conspired to complain against him", he said. Some students told News18 that the professor has still not been suspended from his post at the university and it took the police over 72 hours to act. They reportedly pushed him when he got up, latched the door and blocked it with a sofa.
