United Kingdom counter-terror police probe 'unexplained' death of Russian businessman

Sky News' home affairs correspondent, Mark White, said Mr Glushkov's home in New Malden, southwest London, was being treated as a crime scene.

Nikolai Glushkov was found dead Monday night.

Founder of the Vedomosti newspaper Demian Kudryavtsev said on Tuesday in a Facebook post that Glushkov had been found dead in his London home; he added that he had learned about the death of the Russian businessman from friends. An inquest failed to determine whether he had killed himself or died from foul play.

The Metropolitan Police said they have assigned counter-terror officers to investigate the death "because of associations [Glushkov] is believed to have had".

New counterterrorism chief Neil Basu, who referred to Skripal as a British subject and his daughter as a Russian national, also said Salisbury residents would see much police activity in the coming days and that they should not be alarmed.

Despite the police statement, the businessman's death seems to have prompted another wave of hysteria and conspiracy theories on social media.

In 2010, Glushkov received political asylum in the UK.

Glushkov told the inquiry that he bumped into Litvinenko in the office of Boris Berezovsky, a powerful oligarch an émigré who was found dead in 2013 on the bathroom floor of his home in Berkshire, on the western outskirts of London.

In the 1990s, Glushkov worked for the state airline Aeroflot and Berezovsky's LogoVAZ auto company. I have quite different information from what is being published in the media.

In 1999, he was accused of fraud, embezzlement and money laundering.

He gave evidence in a case in 2011 brought by Mr Beresovsky against Roman Abramovich, who he claimed had cheated him out of £3.2bn. "Too many deaths [of Russian exiles] have been happening", he told the Guardian.

Glushkov continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding Berezovsky's death for some months. In 2017, a Moscow court reviewed his case and he was sentenced to eight years in prison in absentia for stealing as much as $123 million from Aeroflot in the 1990s. [But] I don't believe it was suicide.

"Mr. Skripal and his daughter were poisoned with a military-grade nerve agent of a type developed by Russia", British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Monday.
