Flood's corporate profile outlines his experience in several high-profile legal fights, including the Clinton impeachment process and former Vice President Dick Cheney in a civil suit from former Central Intelligence Agency officer Valerie Plame.
But there have been signs in recent months that Mr. Trump may be looking to shake up his legal team and change his approach to Mr. Mueller's investigation.
In a series of tweets Sunday morning, Trump denounced a report from the New York Times saying that Washington lawyer Emmet T. Flood, who represented former President Bill Clinton during his impeachment, visited the Oval Office to discuss the possibility of helping to deal with the Justice Department. The White House is now negotiating with Mueller over a possible interview with the president.
Trump now has White House lawyer Ty Cobb in charge of the inquiry, after his longtime personal lawyer Marc Kasowitz stepped aside last summer.
It's unclear if Flood expressed interest in joining the White House after last week's reported meeting.
On Sunday, the president tweeted that his lawyers had shown there was no collusion with Russian Federation, and that the "only Collusion was that done by the DNC, the Democrats and Crooked Hillary", as he calls Hillary Clinton, his opponent in the 2016 presidential race. He also served in the White House Counsel's Office under President George W. Bush and has represented former Vice President Dick Cheney.
In response to the report, Trump tweeted Sunday that he wasn't adding another lawyer to "help out" and accused the Times of intentionally writing a "false story".
Last year, Flood turned down a post that ultimately went to Ty Cobb, the White House lawyer now assisting the president with the special counsel's probe, Reuters reported in July.
As recently as the summer, Mr. Flood, who now works at the law firm Williams & Connolly, turned down an opportunity to represent Mr. Trump.
White House officials did not immediately answer a request for comment when the Times reached out.
