Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: India beat Ireland to finish 5th

India thus avenged the 2-3 loss to Ireland in their last league match on Friday which ended their slim chances of qualifying for the medal rounds.

Although the Indian team lost the match, the young Indian team gave an impressive performance and tried to restrict the Olympic Gold Medalists.

Gleghorne had a short corner blocked with just over four minutes remaining, before England removed Pinner to use Brendan Creed as a kicking-back.

Australia are the world number one side, Argentina are rated two, England seven and India six.

India's next match was against England and they were looking forward to their first win in that match.

Ramandeep Singh (10th minute) and Amit Rohidas (26th) scored for India, who needed a win to seal their place in the bronze-medal play-off, while Shane O'Donoghue (24th), Sean Murray (36th) and Lee Cole (42th) scored for Ireland.

With 1-0 lead, India had to contain Ireland and ensure they stayed ahead.

It was O'Donoghue who claimed the equaliser as he calmly placed the ball past the oncoming keeper; following a pinpoint pass from Chris Cargo to start the move and a skilful slip from Kirk Shimmins to the waiting O'Donoghue.

A foot foul by Dipsan Tirkey saw India concede a PC only 15 seconds prior to the half-time hooter but Suraj Karkera was on top of his job to save the PC.

IT HAPPENED Ireland came back twice from a goal down to record their first ever win over India. Though India had more circle entries, they could not make much of it thanks to an alert Carr at the goalpost.

With time ticking away, India pulled out their goalkeeper to add an extra man to their attack.

Govers' thundering drag flick went unanswered and a confident Australia made further inroads and went 2-0 up with Lachlan Sharp firing in the rebound from a 53rd-minute penalty corner.

Australia took the lead in a tightly contested game when Blake Govers drilled a low shot into the bottom corner from a penalty corner.
