More than 15 characters will be playable in Mario Tennis Aces, among them Nintendo stalwarts such as Mario, Waluigi and Donkey Kong as well as more surprising characters like Chain Chomp and Toadette. You can either play with the controllers in horizontal modes or with motion controls that mimic real life tennis swings.
Mario TennisAces will have an online 1v1 tournament - a beta, effectively - before the game's release on June 22.
Ahead of the game's June 22nd launch this year, Nintendo is also hosting a special pre-launch online tournament.
Nintendo also announced that there would be a simple mode, for players who prefer to just participate in a normal round of tennis. A story mode hasn't been included in Mario Tennis games since the 2005 release of Mario Tennis: Power Tour for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. It will be released for the Switch and 3DS on July 13. Fun fact: according to the late Nintendo President and CEO Satoru Iwata, the game was compatible with an unreleased piece of hardware for the GameCube that allowed the display of 3D images. Given that this is right after the one year anniversary of the Switch launch, Nintendo could be showing some of the tricks it has up its sleeves if it wants to sell that projected 20 million units this year.
