Mario Tennis Aces Serves Up Fun on June 22

As expected Nintendo dropped the release date for Mario Tennis Aces on today's Nintendo Direct, and as previously leaked, the game will launch on June 22. Considering that the primary criticisms of that game revolved around its lack of content and innovations, we'd say that the quick reveal of Mario Tennis Ace's story mode suggests that Nintendo is aware of what went wrong and is willing to fix it. That's where Mario Tennis Aces comes in.

Aces is the latest entry in the Mario Tennis series.

First and foremost, Mario Tennis Aces has up to 4-player online multiplayer, events based online tournaments. While Mario Tennis and Mario Tennis Advance had you creating your own character and meeting rivals in a tennis club, Aces seems to have you playing as Mario. Zone Shots, which can damage an opponent's racket, are one kind of powered-up option that players have at their disposal. Finally Super Shots are ridiculously powerful shots that can blow the opponent right off of the court.

All those moves consume energy from a gauge that slowly fills up over the course of a rally. If you don't want to deal with any of this stuff, you can play with "simple rules", under which only basic shots - topspin, slices, lobs, etc. - are allowed.

"Swing Mode" will let you use the Joy-Con motion control to play the game in a different way that will have your body moving.
