Oosthuizen leads WGC Mexico Championship

England's Chris Paisley may not have been deemed worthy of a profile picture on the tournament website, but his name featured proudly near the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the WGC-Mexico Championship.

Johnson, 33, has enjoyed plenty of success at WGC events and first won this tournament in 2015, when it was held at Trump National Doral in Miami.

World Number 1 Dustin Johnson, who is back defending his title also sent the announcers into hysteria as he came agonisingly close to holing out on the par 3 17th.

Schauffele had six birdies in his 65. The last six winners of this event, which moved to Mexico from Doral a year ago, include Johnson (who has won twice), Adam Scott, Patrick Reed, Tiger Woods (a seven-time champion) and Rose. He put together a 7-under 64 on the Chapultepec Golf Club, which sits at an altitude of more than 7,600 feet above sea level.

It was a mixed day for Johnson aside from the near-ace, adding six birdies, a double bogey and two bogeys.

The long-hitting American already has three top-10 finishes in four PGA Tour starts this season, including a January victory at Kapalua, and will tee off at Club de Golf Chapultepec with an eye on gaining some momentum ahead of the April 5-8 Masters.

Last week's Honda Classic victor, Justin Thomas, never found his rhythm in the opening round and signed for a 1-over 72to be T39.

Oosthuizen made a short eagle putt late in his round and birdies on two of the short par 4s for a 7-under 64. "I really kind of started on Tuesday, wasn't swinging it very well, and then yesterday I just was hitting it terrible".

Victor of the 2010 Open Championship, South African Oosthuizen opened with a seven-under-par 64 in Mexico on Thursday. It's just that since their inception, the World Golf Championship events have largely been the domain of the game's most recognizable players, a dependable catalyst that produces predictably impressive contenders and champions.
