USA woman wakes up with British accent

While those disappeared after about a week, Myers said that she has been speaking in a British accent for at least two years now.

Because of a rare genetic disease, a woman woke up with different accents three times already. The British accent is the latest in her freaky string of voice changes after she fell asleep with a headache, and she's understandably frustrated. I try to explain that I am American and they say, 'Why, because you got your green card?' thinking I'm foreign, but have married a U.S. citizen.

Meyers wants to make clear she's not faking it or insane.

Doctors said Myers isn't "a loon" and she isn't faking it, she has a condition called Foreign Accent Syndrome, which usually follows a stroke or other condition that causes neurological damage.

Myers told the Sun, a British tabloid, that she found her condition "really difficult to begin with. people would think it was a joke, saying things like, 'You sound like a Spice Girl.' It was hard, because I was really struggling". The condition makes skin elastic and joints flexible to the point of dislocation, leading to the rupture of blood vessels, which is why Myers constantly has bruises on her legs. The severe headaches Myers experienced prior to her accent changes have been compared to "mini" strokes which can fundamentally alter certain brain function.

That's disturbing enough on its own, but this isn't even the first time Myers has experienced a headache-prompted voice change. The disorder typically occurs after strokes or traumatic brain injuries damage the language centre of a person's brain - to the degree that their native language sounds like it is tinged with a foreign accent, according to the Center for Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas. A headache left her speaking gibberish for a couple of days before her accent shifted.

Meyers told ABC that she has had a busy medical history, with regular visits to the hospital and a stack of medical records stocked at home. "People like me - we don't care which one it is", she explained. According to doctors, this condition, although extremely rare, is indeed real. "I'm sad [.], I feel like a different person".

In 2016, Lisa Alamia, a Rosenberg woman started sounding British after waking up from jaw surgery. "There's been about a 100 cases reported in the last 100 years and it's something that's pretty unique and rare".

"I believe everything happens for a reason, so, maybe this happened because it helps me to break the ice with people", she said.
