Pochettino lauds 'amazing' Eriksen after Juventus draw - 'He always steps up'

Feb 14, 2018, 18:30

Italy's Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini does not specifically remember welcoming Tottenham Hotspur's England striker Harry Kane to global football with one of his crunching tackles but admits it may have happened.

Not only that but Kane's nine-goal haul from his first nine games is more than any other player in the history of Europe's blue-riband club competition ― one more than the quartet of Ronaldinho, Simone Inzaghi, Didier Drogba and Diego Costa.

"He's a player who links the team and he was fantastic".

Medhi Benatia gifted Eriksen a chance and Kane went sprawling to the ground in the area but German referee Felix Brych was having none of it.

"We have a draw against Tottenham in the Champions League and it is like a big loss. It showed character", Kane said.

"It was an excellent performance after that and we take two away goals to Wembley".

Yet, Tottenham managed to come from two goals down in their Champions League last-16 first leg tie in Turin.

Higuain had a chance to put Juventus ahead 3-1 with a penalty kick in first half stoppage time, but his attempt drilled the crossbar and kept the score close.

And speaking after the game, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino believes his side deserved to win.

Kane became the first player to score past Buffon in 2018, and the Italian goalkeeper showed the England worldwide how much he respected him with a post game embrace (above). Against a team with one of the best defensive records in football and a goalkeeper who had not conceded for 694 minutes until last night, they turned it on once more.

"We still have a good chance to qualify in London, but it's totally insane to think that Juventus has to win 3-0 in the round of 16 in the Champions League".

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri reacted strongly afterward when it was suggested his team, who are going for a seventh successive Serie A title, should have beaten Spurs, who are fifth in the English Premier League. And at 2-0 you always need more energy. "Only seven minutes and it was hard to handle these seven minutes, but for 83 minutes we dominated Juventus and that is a thing to praise because not many teams can come here and dominate a team like this".

"Juventus play to win the Champions League but we are not the favourites to win it".

However, Eriksen's decision to hit the free-kick at Buffon's side was heavily influenced by a save Cech pulled off in the north London derby, with the Dane opting not to shoot at the far, top corner this time around.
