Cubs, Darvish agree to 6-year deal

Chicago has agreed to a six-year deal with right-hander Yu Darvish, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported Saturday afternoon.

The money or the years shouldn't matter right now.

The addition of Darvish gives the Cubs a big boost as they try to return to the World Series after winning the title two years ago for the first time since 1908.

It had to be Yu. With Darvish off the market, perhaps we start to see some other free agent starter dominoes fall, too. The Cubs' payroll is roughly $168 million with Darvish's $21 million average salary, according to Spotrac, which gives them the sixth-highest payroll in baseball. This is how you sustain success.

Darvish finished last season with the Dodgers, helping them knock out the Cubs in the playoffs to reach the World Series. Theo Epstein has turned the Cubs into one of - if not the - prime free agent destination during his tenure. "Obviously, I've made my sales pitch".

The Cubs have been rumored to be in the running for Darvish for months as they look to fill the void left behind by former Cy Young victor Jake Arrieta. Your great-great-uncle Amos can come at me if he wants to argue on behalf of early-1900s Cubs, but even he knows no player did more heavy lifting than Arrieta starting in 2015.

In accomplishing all that, Arrieta changed the nature of what it meant to be a Cub. Agent Scott Boras also might not have done Arrieta any favors setting such lofty parameters for negotiations that never really got anywhere. He's pitched in high-pressure situations with the Dodgers and Rangers throughout his career. Spring training in Mesa, Ariz.is about to get a lot busier as the Japanese media and the national reporters will decamp to Sloan Park to take the temperature of the restocked 2016 World Series champions. As an Astros player told Sports Illustrated, Darvish - who always pitches out of the stretch - tipped his pitches by the way he moved the ball into his glove from the set position. For one things, Darvish was famously awful in the World Series previous year, and his two bad performances - whether they were because of a slider-proof baseball or because he was tipping his offspeed pitches - probably cost the Dodgers a World Series title.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Dodgers may have also had a six-year deal on the table but couldn't quite match the dollar amount the Cubs offered. Darvish's primary gains by landing with the Cubs is premium run support and a boost in terms of strikeouts, considering he spent much of his USA career pitching at Texas' Globe Life Park, which severely deflates them.
