LSU, on the other hand, could make the biggest jump in the rankings among all other schools as it is expected to sign two other highly ranked prospects. That reflects an increasing challenge to Alabama's dominance on the field and in the living rooms of recruits.

Alabama continued its run of reeling in multiple 5-star prospects today when top-rated cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. verbally announced his intention to sign with the Crimson Tide during a National Signing Day ceremony from his high school.

"What's the most competitive thing we do around here?"

Before 8 a.m., Alabama got a major shock when Bobby Brown, a four-star defensive tackle from Arlington, Texas, who had previously committed to UA, flipped and signed with Texas A&M.

The defending college football national champions picked up the highest-ranked remaining uncommitted recruit in the country on National Signing Day.

The 6-foot-2 was believed to be deciding between Alabama, Clemson, LSU and Miami.

Alabama football insiders have said the Tide coaches chose this option rather than using a scholarship for Josh Purdy or James Foster.

Texas A&M is also looking to fill its quarterback vacancy in the class of 2018.

Landing a No. 1 class this year would have been a stretch, with Alabama not having enough scholarships free to sign a full class of 25 (or more, as in some past years).

Clemson and Southern Cal actually earned their spot by outrecruiting Alabama for several highly rated targets, including four-star Phenix City (Alabama) receiver Justyn Ross - the state's No. 1 overall player - choosing the Tigers over both the Alabama and rival Auburn. While Saban and Co. are bringing in potential stars, as they always do, there isn't the same number of high-level recruits that we're accustomed to seeing at the top of their class.

Alabama also will have preferred walk-on Braxton Barker, son of former Tide QB Jay Barker, on the roster this fall. "So I don't think we struck out anywhere". (No. 6) gives the 2018 class two of the top six players in the nation. He became Alabama's first official signee of the day.
