Two Dead After Strong Earthquake Rattles East Coast of Taiwan

According to reports, a hotel on the east coast of Taiwan has collapsed and at least 30 people are trapped in it.

The national fire agency said at least four buildings had fallen or been damaged, with televison footage showing roads strewn with rubble and cracks in highways.

A shallow 6.4-magnitude natural disaster rocked eastern Taiwan late today, United States geologists said, the latest in a string of quakes to have hit the region in recent days.

The quake was centered in the East China Sea about 21 kilometers north-northeast of Hualien City. Some are still trapped inside of the half-collapsed hotel and are shining the torches on their phones so responders know they're there.

Four other buildings, including two hotels, also tilted during the natural disaster in Hualien, a popular tourist destination on Taiwan's eastern coast, about 120 kilometres south of the capital, Taipei.

Compilation footage posted to Twitter by the China Global Television Network shows a building tilting on its side over a line of cars parked along the street. Another clip shows the damage caused inside a store.

Officials from Hualien fire department said 28 people had been rescued from the hotel and a residential building.

With a quake of this size there's always the potential for aftershocks. Some facts reported by the media will later turn out to be wrong. The quake could be felt across Taiwan, CNA reported. We will update as the situation develops.
