Why Did Belichick Bench Butler? Don't Ask the Patriots

I just feel that way.

Three years after making a title-clinching interception, New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler did not start in Super Bowl LII Sunday due to a "coaches decision".

"I appreciate the question, but it would be a much longer discussion", Belichick said Monday. I have nothing but great things to say about the organization. There were no reports of Rowe practicing with the starters in the sessions leading up to the game, suggesting that Belichick's decision was not football-related.

Butler hasn't been fantastic this season, we can admit that, but he had played in 98% of all the Patriots defensive snaps.

Butler told ESPN's Mike Reiss that the Patriots "gave up on me" and that "I could have changed that game". I know players that they used to let [their] wives sleep in the bed with them on away games.

The New England Patriots made a decision to bench Pro Bowler Malcolm Butler instead of playing him against the Philidelphia Eagles. No one seems to know for sure, but Butler isn't happy about it. On the Patriots side, all the buzz from Super Bowl 52 surrounded Malcolm Butler's notable absence in their loss to Philly. We could get Alshon [Jeffery] out there against him.

Seven plays later, Foles found Ertz again for a touchdown that put the Eagles up for the good.

Butler was benched. "They gave up on me", he said after Sunday's loss, but Belichick afterward offered little reason as to why, beyond insisting he picked the players he thought gave New England the best chance of victory.

Below, fans can vote on whether or not they believe Oakland should find a way to scoop up the former Super Bowl hero.

Butler, though, was in no mood after the game to speculate about what might come next for him.

Eric Rowe, the Patriots' slot corner who started in Butler's place, said he didn't know he'd be in the lineup until just before game time.

Belichick's past unorthodox moves like using wide receivers Julian Edelman and Troy Brown as defensive backs could always be justified as genius from a prescient mad scientist, but benching Butler was different.

He calls Butler the best defender ever and says the Patriots gave up the most yards ever in a Super Bowl because of his absence.

The reasoning was not clear, but Butler's benching was not for disciplinary reasons.

Due to the unusual circumstances surrounding Butler's absence during the Super Bowl the Texans will need to tread lightly.
