Pentagon updates United States nuclear posture review

As the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump prepares to unveil its review of the U.S. nuclear posture, more experts are warning that developing a new type of nuclear weapon to meet President Donald Trump's demands would trigger an arms race.

Earlier in a tweet, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned that the USA policy document pose the risk of bringing humankind closer to annihilation.

The U.S. military believes its nukes are seen as too large to be used and wants to develop low-yield bombs-a move that has prompted condemnation from China, Iran and Russian Federation. Low-yield weapons with a strength of under 20 kilotons are less powerful but are still devastating.

'We expect that the United States leaves behind its Cold War mentality (.) understands China's strategic intention, its national defense plans and military development, ' Ren told reporters.

China "has always kept its own nuclear forces at the minimum level required by national security", Mr Ren said.

On Twitter, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also lashed out.

China has criticized a USA government report that portrays Beijing as a potential nuclear adversary.

Beyond Russia, the review calls North Korea and its leader Kim Jong-un a "clear and grave threat" to the United States and its allies, repeating the Trump administration line that a North Korean nuclear attack against the U.S. or its allies will result in "the end of that regime". The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima had about the same explosive power.

The comprehensive report, which is largely in line with the 2010 review done by the Obama administration, reaffirms commitments to non-proliferation treaties but emphasizes the need to enhance capabilities to match with Russian Federation, showing supports for the united states' nuclear modernization projects.

The new NPR calls for a continuation of the nuclear modernisation programme ordered by Mr Obama across the "triad" of ground-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched weapons and bombs delivered by plane. Bringing back sea-based nuclear missiles.

"The United States now faces a more diverse and advanced nuclear-threat environment than ever before, with considerable dynamism in potential adversaries' development and deployment programs for nuclear weapons and delivery systems", the document claimed.

Zarif said the new policy was "in violation" of the worldwide Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Previous year it said that Washington's defense strategy tied to "outdated notions".
