Iran Cracks Down, Arrests 29 Women for Not Wearing Hijab in Public

After Iran's 1979 revolution, women were obliged by law to cover their hair with a scarf, known as the hijab, and wear long loose fitting clothes.

"These people are not fighting against a piece of cloth, they are fighting against the ideology behind compulsory hijab", said Ms Alinejad, who called the movement the "true face of feminism".

The campaign against compulsory hijab was originally started by Masih Alinejad. The women of Iran have always been ignored.

Wearing headscarves, or hijab, in public is mandatory for women in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

"When the regime calls itself an Islamic regime, women become the political-cultural symbol of that regime, and therefore monitoring, managing, punishing, disciplining a woman's body and their sexuality becomes a very important political policy", Mojab said.

The #whitewednesdays campaign is part of a larger online movement started three years ago by the journalist, who has lived in self-imposed exile since 2009.

The easing of the enforcement has emboldened younger women to become more defiant, but recent incidents in which they have removed their hijabs in protest could still lead to prison sentences.

Alinejad noted that some of the women arrested in the crackdown have been slapped with penalties and bail amounts far in excess of what Iranian law allows.

Sohelia Jolodarzadeh, a member of Iran's parliament, said the protests are due to the government's "wrong approach". A common report involves women allowing their headscarves to drop while riding in cars, an offense that can result in the auto being impounded.

Women and girls older than age 9 have been required to wear a headscarf and long, wide coats to hide their hair and body since Iran's Islamic Revolution of 1979.

According to the Guardian, Iranian officials accused Alinejad, who works for the U.S. government-funded media organ Voice of America, of receiving money from foreign governments to fund her campaign. According to a human rights lawyer who took up her case, she was finally released from detention last weekend.

An Iranian lawmaker says authorities detained almost 5,000 people during the widespread protests and unrest that took place in January.

Movahed was freed from jail on Monday after almost a month in detention, her lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh said.
