Plane Makes Miraculous Emergency Landing On Freeway

The plane was headed for an airport in Orange County, but had to make the emergency landing due to engine trouble.

The 25-year-old said he made a split decision to land on the freeway when strong winds prevented him from getting to the John Wayne Airport.

Slod and the plane's only other passenger, Daniel Gross, explained they were flying to Van Nuys from San Diego when they lost power in the plane.

"You don't have a choice", he told KCBS.

The plane landed near a freeway exit and was seen in images with emergency workers surrounding it. "I didn't know if I was going to make it".

"I saw an opening on the highway and I went for it right away", Israel Slod said after safely guiding the single-engine Beech G33 onto State Route 55 in Costa Mesa on Sunday night. "I had to make a last-minute, last-second judgment on whether or not we could make it over, and we didn't have the airspeed to make it over, so I went under it", he was further quoted as saying.

"Slod attributes the safe landing to "a lot of luck", adding: "[I'm] not a big believer but [it was] definitely a miracle". In June 2017, a Cessna crashed onto the I-405 freeway near John Wayne Airport, injuring the husband and wife aboard the plane but no one on the freeway.

Several videos posted to social media showed the plane sitting on the right side of the highway with no visible damage.

Witnesses told CBS Los Angeles it was a miracle that the plane touched down the way it did."It boils down to, very simply, training", Slod said.
