Quiksilver CEO missing in French waters as empty boat washes ashore

Pierre Agnes, 54, had ventured out at around 7.30am (2.30pm Singapore) on a routine fishing trip before contacting the local harbour master to say he was delaying his return because of fog, a source close to the rescue team told AFP.

France's coastguard launched a search operation for the chief executive of the surfwear brand Quiksilver on Tuesday after his sailing boat was found washed up on a beach on France's Atlantic coast.

The empty boat was found on the sand in Hossegor in southern France, the Associated Press said.

Quicksilver recently changed its name to Boardriders, regrouping its other brands including surf and snowboard women's brand Roxy and skateboard footwear brand DC Shoes.

Two boats and three helicopters have been deployed for the search efforts.

Rough seas are reported in the area by forecasters, although the wind is relatively light and visibility is clear.

Quiksilver, known for its surf wear, was founded in Australia but is now majority-owned by an American investment group and based in Huntington Beach, California.

Quiksilver's parent company, Boardriders Inc., now controls an extensive portfolio of action sports brands including Quiksilver, Roxy, DC Shoes, Billabong, RVCA, Element, VonZipper, and Xcel.

In 2015, the company filed for bankruptcy in the US.
