Hyderabad to see super moon, lunar eclipse on January 31

Local Astronomer Wayne Holmes has had an interest in astronomy since he got his first telescope and began reading about the objects in the sky at a young age.

Said Johnston, "I have always been fascinated by the night sky". Thankfully, Holmes has agreed to share his knowledge in this column, Solar System and Beyond that will appear occasionally in The Nelson Daily.

The Grand Strand could see a partial lunar eclipse Wednesday morning, during the second full moon of 2018, known as the super blue blood moon eclipse. The closest approach the Moon will make to the planet occurs on the night of January 30, according to Space.com, which would be a peak Supermoon if it was a full moon at that time. Because of the timing of the full moons, February will not have one and March will have two.

Earlier this month we were treated to a supermoon on New Year's Day.

It may sound like the apocalypse is nigh, so let's break it down by its three parts: "super", "blue" and "blood".

An extremely rare celestial event will be taking over the UAE skies on January 31 - a "Super Moon Eclipse" will occur.

This will require an unobstructed view of the west-northwest before moonset (7:41 a.m.), assuming the sky is mainly clear (which is looking a bit doubtful).

So, by now you've probably heard that a special and rare full moon will rise on Wednesday. Otherwise, your view of the sinking moon partly in Earth's darkest shadow (umbra) will be blocked. If you sign up to Slooh, they will be livestreaming the moon's phase, which will last approximately five hours. Totality will occur at 4:52 a.m., when the moon is fully immersed in the Earth's shadow.

That makes the moon look extra-close and extra bright - up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than a full moon at its farthest point from Earth, known as the apogee, NASA said.

While much of America will see the full-scale eclipse, "observers on the East Coast with an average western horizon will only see the upper left limb of the moon appear dusky in nature as it moves deep into Earth's secondary shadow, the penumbra, around 6:45 a.m.", Becker wrote.

A blue moon seen in the night skyWhat is the difference between a supermoon and a blue moon? By about 6:15 a.m. CST the Earth's reddish shadow will be clearly noticeable on the Moon.

You won't want to miss this lunar eclipse because NASA says you'll have to wait nearly another year for the next opportunity in North America! The moon will be just above the horizon by less than a degree, perhaps already set for many area viewers.
