The spectacular public affray appears to mark the end of a three-decade political friendship, during which Richardson said he lobbied for Suu Kyi's release from house arrest.

Suu Kyi's office said on Thursday her government had asked Richardson to step down and accused him of pursuing "his own agenda".

"I still admire and like her, but I am sure that's not the case on her part", he said. "They're just a noisy bunch actually, '" he added.

On Monday, just a day before the beginning of the much-discussed repatriation process of Muslim Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, all of a sudden Bangladesh made a decision to postpone sending them back to their native country.

In the same speech, he had more words to say about the UN. "Much of the hatred and discrimination against the Rohingya population has been cultivated over many years", said Smith.

Responding to his departure, Richardson said the Myanmar government was doing nothing but perpetuating a "whitewash" and that the country's de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi lacked "moral leadership". "Suu Kyi and her moral leadership could have gone a long way to unpack and unravel that ... instead (she's) actually perpetrated numerous stereotypes and anti-Muslim and anti-Rohingya discrimination".

On January 16, Bangladesh and Myanmar "finalised an agreement" to send back thousands of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar from their temporary "home" in Bangladesh.

The August attack ignited the exodus of more than 650,000 refugees from Rakhine state to Bangladesh as well as atrocities against the displaced persons.

Richardson had previously said he got into a furious argument with Suu Kyi at a Monday night dinner when he brought up the case of two Reuters reporters, who were arrested on December 12 on suspicion of violating Myanmar's Official Secrets Act. There is a "power bubble that has been created around her", filled with people who "tell her how great things are", he said.

The man under constant fire over human rights issues has a piece of advice to Myanmar's Nobel Peace laureate and democracy icon: just ignore the critics.
