Several dead, dozens wounded in Kabul blast

Jan 27, 2018, 16:50

The Health Ministry said 95 were killed and 158 wounded.

At least 40 people were killed and 140 injured after an ambulance packed with explosives blew up in a crowded area near a police checkpoint close to foreign embassies and official government buildings on Saturday, Reuters reported. Taliban took the responsibility for the attack.

Mirwais Yasini, a member of parliament who was nearby when the explosion occurred, said an ambulance approached the checkpoint and blew up. He added that bodies were lying everywhere and people rushed to help the injured in the attack.

India today strongly condemned the "barbaric and dastardly" terrorist attack in Kabul targeting innocent civilians, and extended all possible assistance, including for treatment of the injured.

The attacker reportedly drove past a security checkpoint on his way to the street.

He detonated his explosives at a second check point, Mr Rahimi said.

"All the windows shattered, the building collapsed and everything came down".

"I was sitting in the office when the explosion went off", said Alam, an office worker whose head was badly cut in the blast. "It was really huge - all our windows are broken". "So far we don't have any reports if any of our members are wounded or killed", he told AFP.

On Dec. 28 a suicide bomber and other explosions at a Shiite cultural centre in Kabul killed at least 41 people in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group that may have been aimed at a pro-Iran news outlet based in the building.

It happened in a heavily guarded part of the city, as did the attack a week earlier. The Interior Ministry says a suicide auto bomb attack in Kabul has left dozens wounded. "The perpetrators of these attacks and their supporters should be brought to justice", said a statement issued by India's external affairs ministry. The Islamic State group was involved in at least 10 fatal attacks in Afghanistan previous year.
